NUCLEAR FAMILY.

NUCLEAR FAMILY
Danny Nolan 2015
Panel arrangement is at discretion of the artist.

PAGE ONE

Panel 1

The establishing shot centres on a letter box and a picket fence. Both are damaged. Behind them is a car tipped onto its side. This car obscures the view beyond the fence. The whole scene is void of colour, in a black and white comic the scene would be decidedly grey. There is no grass just soil and any traces of foliage are represented by bare branches and twigs. There may be an ornamental boulder or small rocks scattered about on a path just visible leading up the letterbox. Behind the overturned car it is completely black. The border of this scene is slightly oval to represent it being viewed through a periscope or modern binoculars.

CAPTION: (Father): Still no change.

Panel 2

POV looking towards a man (Father) staring into a periscope similar to one from Voyage to the bottom of the sea. It is like a large rectangle box with handles sticking out from each side. His face is obscured and his hands hang limply over the handlebar type struts.

Father: If only this damn thing would rotate, then I could get a decent look up there.

Panel 3

Father has lifted his head from the viewer and slams the handles upward so the fit neatly against the viewer. We now see his face. Father is roughly fortyish skinny with a neat beard and long hair that is tied back into a pony tail. He is wearing a loose fitting windbreaker and loose fitting cotton trousers. He has a look of resignation on his face.

Mother (OFF): And “ if onlys” were wishes you’d get the same results dear.

Panel 4

Larger panel

Pull back to reveal Father is standing near the periscope that is fitted to the ceiling. He has pushed it a few inches higher indicating that he has just finished with it. His little corner has a desk with a collection of books and an open note book. There are a row of four gauges visible above the notebook attached to the wall. The room is a bomb shelter with a small kitchenette in the other corner where Mother is opening a can. Behind her tapering off to a third corner is a neat row of shelving with cans  and a water purifier. Some plants can be seen growing in a hydroponics bath that has lights overhanging. In  the centre of the panel is a small table. Two children one about 6 another four both boys are playing with colouring books and a simple jigsaw. Like Father. They are dressed in lose fitting clothes. Their footwear looks like slippers. Mother also looks 40ish skinny and a bit tired. Her hair is also tied back. She is also dressed similar to the other family members except she is wearing a floral apron.
The overall feel of the bunker is 1950s-60s retro all concrete and stainless steel. Every corner of the bunker is a study in well used space. Mother and Father are looking towards each other.

Father: I   know, but if I had a better view…

PAGE TWO

Panel 1

POV from Mother towards Father. We get a better idea of the area of the bunker not seen in the previous panel. The right of Father’s desk is a metal rung ladder leading upward. Beyond that is a doorway that leads to another section of the bunker. Along the walls are more shelves filled with spare parts, books and more cans.

FATHER: ..we wouldn’t have to guess if it was safe to go outside. The visual data could back up the working instruments.

Panel 2

Father is looking down at the notebook and tapping one of the gauges on his desk wall.

FATHER: Even if the temperature gauge did work, we still have the radmeter operational. Thank goodness. It’s been coming down to acceptable levels since that last tremor months ago.

Panel 3

Mother is pouring contents of can into a pot. She has a compact but very efficient kitchen area.

MOTHER: Well it has been near four years, we anticipated the nuclear winter effect to last five. If we were as far from the blast site as you calculated.

Link

Maybe we might be getting closer.

Panel 4

Mother and Father are standing closer together now Mother looking hopeful. Father is still rather serious.

Mother: Maybe it’s time we took a chance, put on suits and went outside.

PAGE THREE

Panel 1

Father is looking at a chart next to the door near his desk. Inside the door we can see old fashioned radioactivity suits hanging. The chart though unreadable has a line in deep decline. Father looks worried.

FATHER (whispered:) But what will we find up there?

Panel 2

A small room used for sleeping quarters. Father and Mother are in a small bed on the floor. Beside them are the two children in bunk beds. Near the bunks on the wall hang some of the children’s drawings. There are also pictures ripped from magazines of beautiful scenery such as open fields and mountains. Father is still awake and thinking. The following panels represent what’s on his mind as he recollects the past.

Panel 3

Mother standing in an entrance/doorway holding a baby and   toddler has wrapped himself around her legs, she is watching Father run towards the house passed the letter box and picket fence. Behind the panicked looking Father we can see down the residential street forming over the houses is a mushroom cloud. In the distance are two smaller ones.

Panel 4

In the families backyard is a heavy duty lid similar to a vault that is opened outward. This is the entrance to their personal bunker Father is handing down a blanket to Mother as several men  come running into the backyard. There is another mushroom cloud a bit closer rising in the distance.

Panel 5

The hatch has been closed and several men, some crying, others angry but all trying to open the hatch. The mushroom cloud is larger.

Panel 7

The men are blown across the yard by the blast shockwave.

PAGE FOUR

Panel 1

Return to Mother and Father in bed. Mother has woken and is looking  at Father with concern. Father’s face is sporting a serious expression.

Mother: Are you thinking about the surface again?

Father: Yeah. I think it’s time.

Panel 2

Mother and Father embrace but both look scared.

Panel 3

Father is trying on the suit and Mother is inspecting it for tears or wear.

Panel 4

Father is now talking to Mother with the suit on and the helmet tucked under his arm. The children are either side of them. Both parents have a half happy half worried look on the face.

Father: We know the radiation levels are acceptable but we have no idea of the surface temperature, which I believe shouldn’t be too much of a concern.
Link
I’m still concerned about other dangers.

Mother: I’m quite happy to have you just have a peek to begin with.

Father: We still have to step out someday. I’m still worried about those that were left up there.

PAGE FIVE

Panel 1 + Panel 2 are inserted into a larger panel 3

Panel 1

Father is now climbing the ladder into an upper section that leads to the hatch.
Mother is holding the children tightly watching him as he climbs.

Panel 2

Close up of Mother with a hopeful look this time as the inner door to the exit chamber is closed.

Mother: Good luck dear.

Panel 3

Pull back to reveal as Father is opening the hatch we find the family’s true predicament. *
They are actually part of a large piece of rock that has been hurtled into space. (Thus the earthquakes mentioned earlier) We can see that the periscope has a large appliance possibly a washing machine (even a broken satellite) resting against it so that it remains trained on the letterbox and front fence. The over turned car is one of many that sit on the edge of what is now an asteroid.
A cut away section further reveals where the family have been living. This is a good chance to give some detail to the bunker. It will also show how the bunker barely fits onto the chunk of rock. The house above is basically a fascia and everything else has been blown away. Several skulls or human remains surround the hatch.
When Father opens the hatch, he will die when he will be sucked out into deep space.

PAGE ONE

Panel 1

It is midday on a cool winter day in Melbourne. The once leafy streets of posh Kew have got a bit out of hand. The nature strips are over grown and the large hedges have lost their neat symmetrical shapes, but here there are lots of high walls and gates jammed when the electricity failed.
Our protagonist is Jay Bean, He is dressed in a thick ski jacket with lots of pockets. He has jeans with leather chaps covering his thighs and shins. He is wearing a beanie.  An assortment of knives can be seen on his waist belt. There are other things that can kill concealed all over his body but we can’t see them.
Jay is looking to use one of these big well protected properties as a place to kip
At the present moment he is dispatching a zombie, a man in a suit who happen to be in his way by cutting off his head.

CAPTION JAY: “With rents plummeting you’re bound to get some shitty tenants”

Panel 2

While staring in the gate of the house that takes his fancy he turns to hear the shuffling from the hedge.

Panel 3

PAGE THREE

Panel 1

Jay steps down the hall and double doors open to reveal a large living room. Hanging from the chandelier is a woman in her mid twenties. She is wearing a woolen jumper, jeans but no shoes. She has soiled herself and the floor. The chair she used to stand on has been  knocked over to one side. She has used electrical chord intertwined with a scarf of silk to hang herself.

Jay (off):

“That explains the smell”

Panel 2

CU of girls face back of Jay’s head in shot indicating he’s inspecting her.

Jay:
“Hmm, looks like I just missed the action.”

Panel 3

Jay with sword still drawn walks through to an adjoining room. A sitting room it is mostly empty but neat.

CAPTION JAY: ”You see a lot of this, people last this long and then something in their head says “That’s enough””

Panel 4

Jay walking past a door and stops abruptly, something has caught his attention.

Jay:

“Woah”

Chunka! chunka!

Panel 2

Jay moves like a Ninja back towards the living room

Panel 3

FOE KILLER JONES AND THE VORTEX OF DOOM

“Foe Killer” Jones and the Vortex of Discovery.
© Danny Nolan 2015
A 5 Page comic for RETRO SCI FI
NOTE: The same scene is basically repeated over for the entire comic.

PAGE ONE
Panel One
Page layout 4x1
Setting the scene:

Arthur Caruthers- a  scientist- is working/standing at a bench in his lab, It goes without saying he is in a grey coat white shirt with tie. He looks like your average 1930s dad bespectacled with brylcreemed hair and clean shaven. His bench is covered in pieces of metal and standard tools like pliers, screwdrivers, a hammer and a hacksaw behind his bench  is a plethora of copper and brass tubes lashings of glass beakers, test tubes and filters with the odd porcelain insulators sticking out.
He is holding a rifle, not just any rifle; this is a thing of beauty. It has a large Aluminium stock and a long shiny barrel. On top of the chamber either side of the barrel are two long chambers and from these chambers are spun metal tubing that winds its way into the body of the stock to feed the barrel which ends at the muzzle in a  wide fluted end much like a blunderbuss. The barrel itself has wide rings progressing up its length. There is no mistaking this for anything other than a ray gun. (see reference)
The scientist is holding it in his hand admiring his handy work.

Panel 2

Enter Lieutenant Robert “Foe-Killer” Jones.  A dashing government agency sponsored mercenary who would be probably digging ditches if it wasn’t for his outrageous luck , fearless demeanour and his ability to never question a superior’s order no matter how daft. There is more than an air of English upper class twit about him. He’s in his mid-twenties good looking clean shaven with a strong jaw and a barrel chest . He could be mistaken for Buster Crabbe. He is dressed in the uniform of the elite Earth Space Rangers (which looks suspiciously like the reference supplied with gun) Nestled on his forehead (for no good reason)are a pair of goggles.
The scientist is not happy to see him.

JONES:  Ah, Caruthers. Working on a new prototype I see.
CARUTHERS:  Well no…

Panel 3

Jones snatches the rifle out of Caruthers’ hands and looks at it. Caruthers is annoyed but knows his place.

JONES:  What do we have here? What a beauty. Let me guess. An anti-Zeppelin gun . No,no,no. I know. A molecular scrambler for destroying stone battlements?
CARUTHERS:  Um,  no. Please…

Panel 4

Jones holds up the gun and looks down the barrel. Caruthers looks very nervous and has his hands up to try and take the gun back.

JONES:  How about a dismember ray for taking out
Floating Bull Whales in the air oceans of Venus ?

CARUTHERS:  You see if….

TITLE AND CREDITS

PAGE TWO

Panel 1

Jones is now holding it like a rifle should be held and is aiming it at a point off panel. Caruthers is now very panicky waving his arms.

JONES:  Oh I give up Caruthers tell me while a take a shot out the window at the tree in the park outside.

CARUTHERS:  eek!

Panel 2

Jones fires the gun and is hit with massive recoil. Caruthers is holding his hands over his mouth his eyes are wide with shock and fear.

SFX: WHOOOOSH!

Panel 3

Jones is sitting on this backside from the recoil; Caruthers is still standing in the same position. Before them is a swirling circle- a vortex floating before them. The vortex is about the same height and diameter as a man , maybe a tad smaller as it will grow in the course of the story. (If possible can it appear to swirl and throb.)

Panel 4
Jones has jumped up with a big smile on his face. Caruthers is still standing except one hand has dropped to his side; the other is still over his mouth. His eyes still wide open in shock and fear.

JONES:  Good Lord Caruthers, this is fantastic. What have you created?

CARUTHERS:  Eeep!

Panel 5
A large series of large jungle vines covered in tropical plants extend from the vortex along with a small (baby) pterosaur flying among them. Caruthers has also fallen on his backside while Jones looks on in fascinated wonder.

SFX:  Flloooop!

BABY PTEROSAUR: (small) Squawk!

PAGE THREE
Panel layout
2x1, 1x2,2x1
Panel 1
The foliage retracts back into the vortex.  Caruthers is getting back up from the floor looking up with a fearful look on his face at the baby pterosaur that has remained and is perched on some lab equipment. Jones is talking to him excitedly.

JONES: Caruthers, a dimensional shift gun, you’ve been earning your shekels in the lab old man.

CARUTHERS :  But…..

Panel 2

Caruthers is up on his feet now and looking at Jones with a look of disbelief. His arms are raised and he is shaking his hands. Jones has pulled out his handgun and is pointing to the vortex whilst talking at Caruthers.

JONES: Stay here and tell High Command that “Foe Killer” Jones is on an unplanned unspecific mission for the greater good.

CARUTHERS :  Wait, you can’t be…..

Panel 3
Pull in and Caruthers hands have dropped to his side. He still has the same look of disbelief on his face. The baby pterosaur is just in panel.
JONES: (off)  For Science and Country.
CARUTHERS: ..serious.

Panel 4

Caruthers is still standing staring at the vortex; the look of disbelief has left his face and has been replaced with one of confusion which he directs at the baby pterosaur.

BABY PTEROSAUR: (small) sqwark!

Panel 5

Caruthers bends down to pick up the dropped ray gun. This time he has a  look of concern on his face. Meanwhile the baby pterosaur flies down and lands on the bench. The vortex is still floating in the room but he seems to ignore it even though it has grown slightly larger. Otherwise he would’ve noticed Jones’ head sticking out of it.

CARUTHERS: Well that was unexpected, my equations and research regarding    X-rays is well off the mark.

Panel 6

Jones (now with a three day growth) has emerged from the vortex so that he’s visible from the waist up , as he talks he is turning to look back into the vortex. A long decorated spear has passed through the vortex missing him by a fair distance The spear has embedded itself above Caruthers’ head, It may have been fatal if Caruthers wasn’t knocked back on his bum in surprise from seeing Jones. . The ray gun across his lap.  The baby pterosaur has hovered above the bench in flight due to the excitement.
JONES:  Caruthers, be a good man and tell High Command that I may be away a bit, I found myself in the middle of an uprising on the planet Dali V.
SFX (Spear) Donk!

PAGE FOUR
Panel layout 5x1
Panel 1
Same scene but Jones’ head has disappeared back into the vortex. Caruthers is staring up at the spear above his head. The baby pterosaur is now perched on it.
CARUTHERS:  Oh?
BABY PTEROSAUR: (small) squawk!

Panel 2

Caruthers is back on his feet looking at the ray gun. He absently-mildly shoos away the baby pterosaur that flutters its wings but goes nowhere.

CARUTHERS:  Hmmm, I must see how I calibrated this to be so far off my intended specifications.

Panel 3

Caruthers back at his bench, the ray gun is lying upon it. He turns in mild surprise to the voice of Jones as he appears once more from the vortex His beard is now at full face. The baby pterosaur still on the spear is also looking at Jones who is wrestling with a large serpent. The vortex has grown slightly wider again. (NOTE: this will be a common occurrence every time he appears so allow for this in panel placement).

JONES:  Caruthers, it looks like I may be a tad longer, there seems to be a damned plague of serpents infesting the city.

CARUTHERS:  What happened to the uprising?

JONES:  Keep up man that was months ago. Be a good man and let High Command know.

Panel 4
Jones’ head once again disappears. Caruthers looks unconcerned. The baby pterosaur is now on Caruthers’s shoulder. He doesn’t seem to care.

CARUTHERS:  Hmmp! Now where did I put that screwdriver?

Panel 5

Caruthers is holding a piece of the ray gun and a screwdriver the baby pterosaur on his shoulders looks on with interest when Jones reappears again, this time he is wearing a large ornate crown on his head and holding a long sceptre. He is sporting a very regal handlebar moustache (Note: The spear is still in the wall.)

JONES:  Caruthers, an update. They made me King!

link

Oh and by the way. I’m getting married.

PAGE FIVE

Page layout: 1x2, 4x1
Panel 1

Jones once again disappears and Caruthers looks more annoyed because he is being constantly interrupted. The baby pterosaur seems to echo Caruthers’s emotions and has an annoyed demeanour about it.

Panel 2

Caruthers is working on the ray gun at his bench, he is still ignoring the vortex which is now quite large. The baby pterosaur still on Caruthers’ shoulder has a spanner in its long beak.

Panel 3

Caruthers is holding the repaired ray gun in his hands as Jones once again reappears in the vortex. This time he is dressed in regal robes , has a crown on his head and is clean shaven again, he is riding a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Strapped to its side are suitcases, wrapped around the beasts neck is a banner reading “Bon Voyage” streamers also seem to be thrown from inside the vortex. The baby pterosaur has lifted off Caruthers shoulder flapping at all the excitement.

JONES:  Caruthers! All’s clear, cleaned up this mess and will be bringing the new family through shortly.

Panel 4

Jones disappears into the vortex as Caruthers aims the ray gun at it. Which now has the baby pterosaur perched on the barrel.

Panel 5

Caruthers shoots the vortex. The recoil puts him on his bum again but the gun is still in the air held up by the flying baby pterosaur.

SFW: HSOOOHW!

Panel 6
The vortex has disappeared and Caruthers looks content. The baby pterosaur dropping the ray gun into his lap.

CARUTHERS:  A disaster narrowly averted. I’ll just tell them it was still in the experimental stage.

DOWN ON THE FARM

Down on the farm

© 2016 Danny Nolan
A 4 page  comic

A tale of what insurance can really do for you.
NOTES: It is a few years in the past nothing too advanced in fashion, but the field of bionic enhancements may have gone up a few notches.

There is no dialogue in this comic.

PAGE ONE

Panel 1

POV  looking from the passenger side (U.S RHS) at two men driving along a country road. Both men are in their late 20s and have flannel shirts on.
We only see the car from the door handles up.
It is a Ford Mondeo or similar in style

Panel 2

Passing a sign reading:  Palmersville: A Productive Town. POP: 751

Panel 3

A man in overalls and two large steam powered mechanical legs is tilling a field  by pulling a large plow by himself.

Panel 4

The two men in the car look at each other. The driver with a look of amazement, the passenger with a look of “told you so” smugness on his.

Panel 5
Change of scene. Jed your typical Mid West farmer in overalls and baseball cap being served papers by a man in a suit at the front door of his house.

Panel 6
Jed at the kitchen table sitting opposite his wife, He has his head in his hands. The default notice lies on the table in front of them.

PAGE TWO

Panel 1

Jed standing over the bench saw, he is sweating and holding out his arm. There is no doubt to his intentions.

Panel 2
Jed in hospital lying in bed with his wife sitting beside him. His arm is heavily bandaged. Another man in a suit this time he is giving Jed a cheque.

Panel 3

POV over Jed’s shoulder. He is at the kitchen table reading a newspaper. In it is an advert for mechanized prosthetics. “Be A New Man” The advert is similar to those silly ads by Charles Atlas where the boy gets sand kicked in his face by the beach bully in front of his girlfriend.

Panel 4

Jed is now,in a corn field cutting corn with scythe like attachment. The harvest is all but completed.

PAGE THREE

Panel 1

Jed is in his shed talking to a neighbour who is holding up a default notice. Jed is leaning on his large mechanical arm. There are attachments in the background that custom fit his arm like a shovel, cutting saw and pitch fork.

Panel 2 (insert in Panel 1)

Jed has he arm around his neighbor as if  telling him the secret. The neighbor has a surprised look on his face.

Panel 3

The man is now at his own farm and his son is standing over him with an axe.

Panel 4

Jed waving his massive arm to his neighbour from across the yard . His neighbour is holding up a tractors front end with his new prosthetic arm while his son changes the tyre.

Panel 5

Back to the two men in the car. The passenger is pointing towards something.

PAGE FOUR

Panel 1

Back to the  two guys in the car who are now driving down Palmersville main street. It is busy little strip with husbands wives and children and everyone seems to be shopping or catching up. IT is noticeable that just about every adult male has some sort of mechanical prosthetic attached, some have two. We can see the cars and other moving machines. They all have cylinders like hot water services attached with hoses running along the bottom half of the carriages. Some have relief valves sticking up high near the driver’s side. The attachments to the cars are only a hint that fossil fuels may be less relied on in this day and age and/or give it a steampunk feel.

Panel 2

Driver looks satisfied as they pull up outside store with a TO LET .sign in the window. Coincidently there is a Doctors Surgery  next door.
Jed is waiting out side.

Panel 3

Both men are outside the car meeting Jed at the curb. On the side of the car is a large sign:
Johnston and Marr Hydraulic and Mechanical Services.
Experts in Cleaning & Maintenance.
Specializing in Insurance Claims.
